This author just spent a week in Taipei and made a great discovery and maybe a glimpse into the future. This totally modern city of about 5 million people is like a wealthy Utopia filled with the most delightful people. It is spotlessly clean. It is built and designed with quality throughout. The least of Taipei may be superior to the best in California! … And besides, everything is cheaper when using the US Dollar. 

But, best of all. the people are very friendly and helpful. They live in a friendly culture and often go out of their way to offer assistance. … This cannot be exaggerated.

The city itself is green and tropical with hills, valleys, and jungle mountains easily accessible by their MRT subway train system. There is a world-class Zoo, a Gondola over the jungle to a mountain temple [or two], a Thermal Valley of hot-spring bathing, scenic rivers, historical monuments, museums, shopping, and night-markets. Oh yes, and lots of great food and restaurants. 

Most remarkable is their lack of crime. People leave their bicycles unlocked. Merchants leave their carts and sales items unguarded. Trust and honesty permeates the atmosphere of these healthy, active, and smartly dressed people. They enjoy a “No-Tipping culture throughout the land. That, along with no sales tax make it a sweet place to visit.

Then, there is their EASY CARD. Use this plastic card for all trains, buses, some taxis, food, and most merchandise. Super convenient, the East Card requires only a “swipe” over a reader. Their buses and trains are better than in California and cost much less [About 50 cents]. Their new and fully equipped taxis costs about the same as buses at home and are more convenient for tourists.

Taipei features one high-rise skyscraper of 101 stories; the Taipei 101. Completed in 2006, this is a super-modern electronic show piece. For example, the elevator is very fast, very quiet, and very smooth. It also entertains with a planetarium show while souring skyward to the observation floors.

Pollution, graffiti, and the homeless were not to be seen in Taipei. The police were also not to be seen, but are available when called [I am told].

All people in Taipei seem very happy and content; even janitors and custodians. But, their little children were happiest of all. When looking into their joyous faces it evokes a good feeling. The future suddenly seems better when their bright little faces reflect the next generation and the leaders of tomorrow.

Children are our future.
